Statement
Previously photographing the vast landscapes of the American Midwest and West, I’ve always been interested in documenting the places we live and our impact on the land. Now, after more than four years in Taiwan, I’ve begun to document Taiwan’s urban landscapes, primarily those of Taipei and Tainan. In the absence of open landscapes, I’ve shifted my lens toward the dense layers of tin, tarp, and concrete that make up Taiwanese cities, where cramped vistas sit partially obscured behind sheets of metal or plastic, like a face behind a mask. Initially intrigued by the unfamiliarly of the urban landscape, I now seek to document Taiwan’s man-made environments, providing a vantage point that is neither idealistic nor damning but instead urges viewers to pause and consider our complex impact on the spaces we call home.
