The inaugural exhibition at One Station in 2026 proudly presents photographers Chen Po-Yi and Chang Shih-Fei, who together illuminate Taiwan's folk rituals of tji (trance mediums), ling (spiritual forces), and ceremonial faith. "Dual Lenses, Dual Solos," they capture divine, primal, and untamed instants of light, gesture, and ritual space, unveiling the profound narratives linking humanity, deities, and spirits.
Spellbound by Chang Shih-Fei
Primitive rituals, the sacrificed souls, the yearning of humanity, and even the open-air stages and the burning of joss paper—no matter how they are cloaked in the "sugar-coated" guise of modern progress, that primal, wild sense of chaos remains indelible.
This chaos reveals to me a "fissure"—a beckoning that transcends time and space—one that I find deeply haunting and transfixing.
Through the orchestration of inadvertent light, shadow, gestures, and scenes, I seek to construct "a conduit beyond reality." It is through such a conduit that I hope to reconcile a philosophy of life, death, and the cosmos that resonates with my inner spiritual landscape.
The Exorcist by Chen, Po-I
The work "The Exorcist" embodies the "medium" prevalent in Taiwanese folk beliefs and customs. It serves as a conduit for communication between the divine and the human, facilitating processes such as possession, supernatural powers, seeking guidance, medical mediumship, and exorcism. This role is often manifested in temple festivals through practices like trance (起乩) and sciomancy (扶乩), acting as a spokesperson for the deities. The essence of "The Exorcist" captures the transformation of human nature into divinity, characterized by physicality, symbolism, objecthood, and spatial contexts. I utilize the lens to capture these moments of alienation, thereby revealing the state of spiritual transcendence.
