Statement
Taiwan is an island rich in biodiversity; however, due to the expansion of human activities, the living spaces of wildlife have been increasingly compressed, leading to heightened conflicts between humans and animals. According to statistics, tens of millions of animals—including rare species—die each year from roadkill. This phenomenon not only causes suffering and death to animals but also results in economic losses to human society.
This series adopts a microscopic perspective to portray the tragedy of wildlife roadkill, aiming to raise public awareness of this critical issue. In the works, animals are enlarged to occupy the central space of the compositions, while miniature human figures symbolize humans, depicting scenes of humans urgently tending to injured animals. The project seeks to alert viewers to the severity of roadkill and encourages reflection on ways to reduce its occurrence.
Huang Pei-Sen
Born in 1986 in Taichung, Huang Pei-Sen is a photographer whose
creative journey is defined by an intersection of technical rigor and
urban exploration. With a foundational background in civil
engineering and furniture design, Huang draws inspiration from the
rhythms of the city, viewed through the lens of his long-term work as a
delivery rider.
This "on-the-road" perspective enables him to reframe everyday urban
scenes as poignant sites of social commentary and humor. Through
visual dislocation and the crafting of miniature dioramas, he explores
the collisions between contemporary Taiwanese politics and the
natural world. Huang's images serve as a bridge between reality and
artifice, capturing the inherent tensions of the modern landscape.
Huang Pei-Sen has received Second Prize and Third Prize at the SKM PHOTO Shin Kong Mitsukoshi International Photography Competition in 2023 and 2024, as well as the Photo Go Award at the 2023 Tainan Photo Go. In 2025, he held his solo exhibition Taiwan Little Emergency at the 1839 Contemporary Gallery, and was invited to participate in group exhibitions including Gods and All Sentient Beings at the National Center of Photography and Images.
